Gestational Diabetes

This page will discuss my journey with Diabetes during pregnancy.   Gestational diabetes mellitus is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. Your body cannot produce enough insulin to handle the effects of a growing baby and changing hormone levels. -

Getting ready to Re-test

There is two times when they do more testing to see if you are one of the lucky ones who get to keep your diabetes as a prize for being a mom. I know that anyone has diabetes or who had it would not call it a prize, but you need to have a sense of humor when it comes to the reality of pregnancy and in my case being an older mom. Not that I want to think of my self as old, but the reality is that in the world of pregnancy I am, which increases a persons chance of getting and keeping diabetes as a result of the pregnancy.
I believe that they tested my blood sugar levels in the hospital, but that was a pretty big blur of a time. I just remember being so concerned about it after delivery that I had to ask my doctor to make sure I was being given the right breakfast. I was so happy in the hospital and I  got to have a coffee despite how terrible a cup it was. For those who don't know I gave up coffee the day after I found out we were pregnant to decrease the chance of a miscarriage.
The second time that test is a few weeks after delivery and because I am writing this many months later I can not remember exactly how many. To skip the suspense, I was lucky and did not test as diabetic after the 1hr prenatal diabetes test. I have to say that it was a bit nerve wracking waiting to get the results but happy when I did. The best part of waiting this time for the results was the beautiful distraction that was learning to become a mother of 2 kids. That however, is a blog for another time.
